The Mask House

Rina, a culinary researcher living a modest life, is chosen by Naoki—the heir to a famous miso manufacturer—and enters a celebrity marriage. She tries hard to fit in with Naoki’s family, but they praise only her looks. In truth, the family has a tradition: they must take in a bride with a “Noh mask face,” resembling the woman who inspired the company’s founder. Worse still, when Rina struggles to get pregnant, the family begins gathering outside women with the same “Noh mask” features to produce an heir. The household even encourages “approved adultery,” and her husband accepts it without hesitation, brazenly carrying on an affair right in their home. Unable to endure that married life, Rina finally leaves and, in a desperate moment, tries to throw herself into a river.
